An Overview of Practice Samatha meditation is all about cultivating one-pointed concentration. Achieving a clear and attentive mind, along with deep and precise concentration, is essential in this practice.
This Samatha retreat will center on Mindfulness of Breathing (Anapanasati), as taught by the Kanni Method. Mindfulness of Breathing meditation, outlined in the Anapanasati Sutta (MN 118), serves as a fundamental step toward reaching Nibbana, which is the freedom from all forms of suffering. Recent empirical studies suggest that practicing Mindfulness of Breathing can improve physical health, alleviate anxiety and stress, and promote overall mental well-being. Thus, it supports not only physical and mental well-being but also spiritual wellbeing.
In the first three days of the retreat, meditators will learn the counting method for practicing Mindfulness of Breathing, which is the first step of Anapanasati. The Kanni Method focuses on achieving a state of absorption and one-pointness by clearly recognizing and counting the in-breath (only).
The next three-four days will focus on the brightness (nimitta) and healing one’s disease in the body. The following three to four days will shift attention to experiencing brightness (Nimitta) and healing one’s diseases. Some participants may confront the unpleasant aspects of the body (Ashubha).
Finally, the last three days willtransition to Vipassana meditation whereas some may continue with Samatha meditation.
